alternatives here, they had been occassionally broken as well, when
the package had a higher version than Perl...
I'm not really sure what the advantage of removing them wholesale on
principle is though. "Occasionally broken" doesn't feel like a strong
argument - lots of things are occasionally broken, and then they are
fixed.
