The apache version was 1.3.42. Apache did not actually dump core, but 
logged messages like
[Tue Mar 5 10:14:31 2013] [notice] child pid 11435 exit signal Illegal 
instruction (4)
[Tue Mar 5 10:14:31 2013] [notice] child pid 14226 exit signal Illegal 
instruction (4)
when attempting to send mail through Squirrelmail.

I guess these would have to be restricted to php 5.3 then.
