Whether the work is there moderates the hate, I'm self-employed
and always have been. I once put beans on the table writing C (11
years to be approximate) , and I may again, but I spoke (slightly
tongue in cheek) of my preferences. Towards the end of my 'C'
career, I started moving away from C++ towards Ansi C with an
object-oriented approach. That's another story entirely and I
retain none of the code.
