Entirely coincidentally, in another project I've had a bug report where using notepad to write Java manifests would fail because the BOM at the beginning of the file would be interpreted as a character, causing the initial Version: field's name to change. I had to add special code to detect them and strip them off. They're a problem *everywhere*.
