`tmpname' not supported?

Hello,
I would like to use os.tmpname(), but I get this exception:
stack traceback:
[C]: in function `tmpname'
./LUFile.lua:220: in function `tmpFile'
Example.lua:236: in main chunk
[C]: ?
Is there a way to enable os.tmpname()?
Alternatively, is there another way to figure out the location of the
tmp directory in a platform agnostic way?
For the record I'm using lua-5.1-work4.
