Not required IMHO... 1. "Alternate" distros or projects usually have their own discussion lists (e.g. quantumstep-discuss at googlegroups.com) 2. QuantumSTEP uses many parts of OpenMoko and just replaces some parts. See it as an alternate Application Suite.
