Thanks to all who replied here or privately, and effectively cleared up the
matter.
I was expecting the f/s to key the PTT via the RS232 interface ( if the rig
supports this feature), as indeed it does for operation via e.g. programmed
F keys. This is NOT the case, and what it does is to route the f/s control
to either the left or right ptt jacks on the rear panel, which then need to
be hooked to the radios as appropriate; I wondered what those sockets were
for!
Now if only I'd stuck to CW, I'd never have run into this problem! Why would
I need a f/s, someone asked? Well if you have ever tried operating vox with
noisy dogs in the shack, you'd certainly know why!
