[WriteLog] rig control

I was helping a friend configure his Writelog contesting software last 
week. He uses a Yaesu FT990 and has the 232 interface. We got WL to 
recognize the radio but the radio would freeze on the 2nd blink of the cat 
interface. We could not change frequencies when this happened and WL 
showed the frequency as something like 20.936. The mode would change after 
we moved the VFO dial. He has an older Eprom version (1.2 I think) in the 
FT990.
I am not sure what is happening here. Can someone help out?
