If all else fails with the serial mouse solutions, I've been very happy with the Microsoft optical USB mouse. I even have an "old" (pre-USB) computer which has an "add-on" USB card - Writelog is happy with it all! I considered a serial mouse for use with my laptop, but opted for the USB mouse instead.
