有力国人であった筒井順慶を駆逐して大和国を支配した松永久秀(1510-77)が築いた平山城の跡。現在は本丸が若草中学校の敷地になっている。佐保川を南の守りとして、丘陵の東西を堀切り、北側に濠と土塁をめぐらせて防衛を固めていた。西側の堀切は聖武天皇陵と光明皇后陵を分ける切通しとなって残り、東側の堀切りは南北の住宅地を結ぶ道路に転用され、上に若草中学校の歩道橋が架かる。城は1576年以後に破却され、松永久秀が建てた四層の天守も解体されたが、織田信長がこの天守を見て安土城天主の建設を思いついたことはよく知られる。近世城郭の草分けとなる城であった。
