Inter-library Loans
Inter-library loan services can help you access books, journal articles, and other resources unavailable in our library collections. These services are available to all University of Melbourne staff and students. Here's how it works:
-
Explore the library
Search our collections for the materials you need. If it's not in our collection, submit an inter-library loan request.
-
Check online
Academic materials are often available online. If you find an article behind a paywall, you might be able to access it for free via the Lean Library browser extension.
-
Submit your request
There are several ways to submit a request. You can access our online forms on our webpage, through Find It@Unimelb, or our website link from the catalogue. You can even request via your Lean Library browser extension.
-
Receive your materials
You'll receive a notification when your request is ready. Your requested materials will be delivered to your email address or designated pickup location.
-
Enter your University of Melbourne Library barcode number to access the request form in the Relais portal. Your barcode number is in small print at the bottom of your ID card. It is also displayed underneath your name in your online borrowing record. It is not the same as your ID number.
-
You can check the status of your inter-library loans via the Relais portal. You can also access the portal via your Borrowing Record.
Please contact us if you need an update on your inter-library loan.
-
Australian copyright laws apply to all inter-library loan requests.
-
We will obtain most things at no cost to you, however, you may be asked to contribute if the costs exceed our preset limit. If this occurs, we will contact you.
-
If you need your item urgently, submit your request and then contact us to let us know.
-
Copies
We provide documents by email. You will receive an attached file or a link to download the document.
Sometimes, articles have Digital Rights Management (DRM), which means there might be restrictions on how many times you can access the article, or it may expire after a certain date. When the document has DRM, the restrictions are stated in the email, along with instructions on how to open the document.
Loans
We'll notify you when your request is ready, and you can collect it at your specified branch library for ten working days.
Some loans need to be used in the library. When this occurs, we will notify you.
-
Please request renewals a few days before the due date by either:
- logging into the Relais portal and clicking the 'Message' button at the bottom right of your request, or
- contact us
-
You can cancel your inter-library loan by either:
- logging into the Relais portal and clicking the 'Message' button at the bottom right of your request, or

-
Yes, if you would like to suggest new material for the library to purchase, send an email to orders-library@unimelb.edu.au
-
If you are having trouble logging in:
- Check your borrowing record. If there are any suspensions on your library account, you cannot log in to the Inter-library Loan portal until you clear your library record.
- Make sure you are entering your barcode number correctly. Your barcode is 14 digits long.
If you need further assistance or need to access a document in the portal, email ill-library@unimelb.edu.au for assistance.
-
The time to fill your request can vary. It can depend on staffing available at our library and supplying libraries and how readily available the item you've requested is. However, including as much information as possible, especially an ISBN or ISSN can result in faster delivery.
Copies
Some copies (generally journal articles and book chapters) are supplied quickly, sometimes within 24 hours, while others may take longer.
Loans
Loans are for physical items that must be processed and sent in the mail and will take much longer if they come from overseas.
Please submit your inter-library loan request using the online forms below. To ensure we can process your request as quickly as possible, include as many details as possible (including an ISBN or ISSN).

We accept loan and copy requests from libraries and commercial and government organisations within Australia and internationally. Most of the material held by The University of Melbourne Library can be requested, and often, 'not-for-loan' material can be copied on your behalf.
Requests for loans and copies from Australian and overseas libraries can be made via the following methods:
- Libraries Australia Document Delivery (LADD)
- OCLC WorldWorldShare Interlibrary Loan
- University of Melbourne direct request form (Only for registered libraries not participating in LADD or OCLC WorldShare).
All requests must comply with the Australian Copyright Act of 1968. If you require a copy of any material the University holds, please include this copyright statement on your request: "This request complies with S50 of the Copyright Act, 1968."
-
We do not supply theses via inter-library loan. However, you can use open access theses or request a digitised copy of a hard copy thesis.
The best way to work out how to access a thesis is to check our online catalogue. When you find a title, you can connect to the record in our institutional repository by clicking the 'Access via University of Melbourne Minerva Access' link.
Access depends on the permission specified by the author. The level of access is indicated in the thesis record's 'Access Status' field. The standard access messages are:
- Open access - access to the full text of this thesis is available online.
- Only available to University of Melbourne staff and students - access to the full text of theses is only available to the University of Melbourne staff and students.
- No attached file is available - access to the full text of this thesis is restricted. It can be viewed read-only in the Baillieu Reading Room on a specified device under staff supervision.
If you wish to view a thesis in the Baillieu Reading Room, click the yellow icon on the right-hand side of the catalogue record to submit a request.
If there is no public access version available, you can request a digitised copy free of charge.
