For a long time
motif has been the de-facto
standard widgetset in the professional world. This had one major issue, and that being
that the source of motif was not free. We, the
Hungry
Programmers implemented a replacement called lesstif under a free license to provide
a way to use free programs written for the motif widgetset. In 2012, the motif source has
been relicensed to
LGPL, making the
lesstif source redundant and obsolete, as its goal has been achieved, a free motif. As
lesstif is practically unmaintained and has serious bugs in the copy/paste realm, I advice
to use the Motif source instead of this source.
LessTif
is the
Hungry Programmers'
version of OSF/
Motif®.
It aims to be
source compatible meaning that the same source code
should compile with both and work exactly the same!
LessTif is
"free software":
it is licensed under the
GNU Library General Public License
(
LGPL).

The Open Source Web for a little
more information about the Open Source philosophy in general.
The current version of LessTif is
0.95.2
as of May 27, 2009.
The code is
available for download
in various packages.
2012: Motif released it's latest version under LGPL. We
recommend using it instead of our code, because it still receives updates
and helps to focus the little development that is going on in one place
instead of two.
We are looking for help. Our copy/paste code in
/lib/Xm-2.1/CutPaste.c
needs some serious attention as it is likely the cause of a lot of trouble.
Unfortunately the original authors of lesstif have moved on and the current
maintainers are not up to the task. If you can help, please contact us via the
mailing list: lesstif-discuss - at - lists.sourceforge.net.
Download statistics are available on sourceforge.net,
this is automatically provided by the SF software
(look at
the files section
on the LessTif project pages).
