comma after question mark / period (direct speech/quotation): in it?',

Hi there,
Could someone please remind me of the rule for inverted commas. From what I remember from school, punctuation marks are always inside the inverted commas but what about when you add a comment such as replied the man /said the man

eg. 'What's in it?' , asked the policeman.
'Just some clothes.' , replied the man.
etc.

Thanks
"What's in it?" asked the policeman.
"Just some clothes," replied the man.

You're right about it going inside the inverted commas. If there is another punctuation mark, then you don't need to use a comma, as the pause is implied with the alternative symbol.
