History of Fort McKay

The Fort McKay Métis Nation has a deep and enduring connection to the land, rooted in the fur trade and kinship ties that date back to the early 19th century. Over the years, despite challenges from industrial development and shifting governmental policies, the community has remained resilient, preserving its traditions and governance. A turning point came in 2018 when the Nation became the first Métis community in Canada to purchase its land, securing a future of self-governance and protection of its heritage. Today, the Fort McKay Métis continue to honor their ancestors while forging new paths in land stewardship and community empowerment.

Foundations in the Fur Trade

The Fort McKay Métis community’s roots are established in the fur trade in northeastern Alberta, where they provided labor and developed close-knit kinship ties with local Indigenous and European groups.

Securing Land Through Government Lease

The provincial government of Alberta granted the Fort McKay Métis a 25-year land lease. This was a significant moment in the community’s effort to maintain land and traditional governance while facing the pressures of industrial development.

First Major Land Purchase

The Fort McKay Métis made their first major land purchase, acquiring 48 hectares of land for a nominal fee from the provincial government. This represented a major step toward land ownership and self-governance

Historic Acquisition of Community Lands

The Fort McKay Métis became the first Métis community in Canada to purchase their entire community land, totaling 133 hectares, from the provincial government. This purchase marked a historic precedent for Métis land rights in Canada.

Recognition as a Self-Governing Nation
