FIA European F3000 1985

The German driver Christian Danner (above) won the inaugural F3000 championship title. In 1985 F3000 replaced F2 as the official feeder series to F1. Mike Thackwell, former F1 driver, fought hard for the title, as did Emanuele Pirro who stayed with Onyx after a year in F2 in 1984. Danner went on to race in F1 and IndyCars. Never driving for a competitive team, he nevertheless finished fourth for Rial in the 1989 Phoenix GP. Pirro's F1 career went nowhere with Benetton and Dallara.

Round 5, Pau: All three San Remo Racing March 85B's were withdrawn after qualifying when cracks were found in their rear suspension. Ivan Capelli drove for San Remo Racing instead of Alessandro Santin. Capelli's Genoa March had been damaged at Vallelunga.
There were originally 12 rounds, but the original round 4 at Nurburgring (D) was cancelled after practice due to snow. Therefore round 4 became the following Vallelunga race etc.
