Fubon Guardians News: Shawn Morimando

On January 8, CPBL broadcaster Wang Yi-Hsuan revealed that several CPBL teams were targeting Shawn Morimando as a potential foreign player candidate, with the Guardians being the most active pursuer.

Fast forward to January 10, the Fubon Guardians officially announced the signing of Shawn Morimando. The 32-year-old American left-hander will return to Taiwan for his fifth CPBL season.

The past two seasons (2023-24) have been somewhat challenging for Shawn Morimando. After an outstanding 2022 season in both the CPBL and KBO, Morimando re-signed with the CTBC Brothers for a full-season deal in 2023. Unfortunately, he suffered a season-ending elbow injury after just one game.

Following the injury, the CTBC Brothers announced that they would extend his 2023 contract into the 2024 season. Shawn Morimando underwent Tommy John surgery in May 2023 and began the long, gruelling process of rehabilitation.

Shawn Morimando spent the majority of the 2024 season rehabbing in the CPBL minor league. He finally made his 2024 debut on August 30, the last day of the trade deadline, pitching four innings and allowing one run on six hits. However, the CTBC Brothers still decided to release him the very next day and replaced him with Ángel Sánchez. Despite the release, the team retained him on a minor league contract through the end of the 2024 season.

During the 2024 offseason, Morimando joined the Australian Baseball League and pitched for the Melbourne Aces. As of the time of writing, he has compiled a 3.11 ERA and 1.16 WHIP over 46.1 innings in the ABL.

With the signing of Shawn Morimando, the Fubon Guardians currently have him and Roenis Elías as their foreign players.

Foreign players come and go. Therefore, we have compiled a foreign player tracker, and I’ll be updating that list regularly to keep pace with the ever-changing roster shuffle throughout the 2025 CPBL season.
