Women’s Soccer Thrives in Central Ohio

Columbus is built for an NWSL team, with a passionate women’s soccer community and a strong history of hosting major U.S. National Team matches. A timeline of the USWNT’s and NWSL’s major moments in our home city:

1993

United States Women’s National Team visits Columbus for the first time, playing at Westerville North High School.

1999

Historic Crew Stadium hosts USWNT for the first time. With an attendance of 23,101, this remains one of the highest attended matches in stadium history.

2003

As the USA's first professional soccer-specific stadium, Historic Crew Stadium welcomed matches during the 2003 FIFA Women's World Cup.

2011

Ahead of the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup in Germany, the USWNT recorded a 'Dos a Cero' at Historic Crew Stadium — beating Japan 2-0.

2019

Historic Crew Stadium hosts its ninth and final USWNT match in front of 20,903 fans.

2022

ScottsMiracle-Gro Field hosts its first USWNT friendly.

ScottsMiracle-Gro Field hosts its first SheBelieves Cup. The USWNT defeated Canada in a penalty shootout to lift the trophy. Brazil and Japan also played as part of the doubleheader.

Jan 15, 2026

NWSL announced Columbus will host its first NWSL game on June 26 as Gotham FC and Kansas City Current compete for the 2026 NWSL Challenge Cup.

Mar 4, 2026

ScottsMiracle-Gro Field hosts its second SheBelieves Cup as the USWNT defeated Canada 1-0 on their way to another title. Argentina and Colombia also played as part of the doubleheader.

Home to Columbus NWSL 2028, the 20,808 seat stadium in Downtown Columbus’ Astor Park sits on a 12-acre site and opened in July 2021. The state-of-the-art facility is designed as a multipurpose event venue and features a natural grass field.
