Oberwerk Astronomy Binoculars
With objective lenses nearly 4 inches wide, these babies are perfect if you have a house with a great view, are into stargazing, or if you're just a plain old peeping tom or paparazzo. Interchangeable eyepieces allow various magnifications and a tripod stabilizes the view (good thing as these massive binocs weigh 25 pounds). This model retails for around 2,000,ドル but Oberwork also has other somewhat less giant (merely huge) binoculars at a more recession worthy price. More at..

Honda CBX 6 Cylinder Superbike - The Last 70's Bike
To me, this is the last and ultimate 1970's bike, looking for all the world like a 1970 CB750 on
the juice, with more chrome than a 1950's Buick, the CBX marked the end of an era. The
game changing Kawasaki GPZ Ninja's essentially put the nail in the CBX's coffin and it faded
away quietly in 1982, largely un-noticed.

Chiefly a European phenomena, supermoto is a kindof hybrid between Motocross and Street
racing. A Supermoto track is much shorter and twistier than a regular track and often includes
a small dirt section. Predictably, the bikes that evolved in supermoto are a hybrid of
Motocross & Street Bikes called supermotards. Combining the lightweight nimble handling of a dirt bike with powerfull brakes and sticky tires, the Supermotard is probably the best City bike
you can get. Suzuki is the first Japanese brand to offer a turnkey production Supermotard, the

The Nordhavn 62' Trawler Yacht
One of my dreams is to cross the Atlantic in a powerboat, I am not however suicidal and have appropriate respect for the power of the open ocean. A healthy fear of drowning limits the number of boats I would be willing to risk a crossing in and the Nordhavn 62 (along with the new Queen Mary) is on my short list. Heavily built, the 62 is built to cruise at 9 knots non stop for over 2 weeks and has an effective range greater that 3,000 miles. The Nordhavn is full of clever features such as it's redundant "get home" motor that under ordinary circumstances provides hydraulic power to the bow thrusters. Should the main engine fail, the auxiliary engine engages a feathering prop to motor to the nearest port. The comfort of the passengers is also well thought out and the boat is equipped with two sub zero fridges & freezers, washer-dryer, trash compactor and the usual bevy of creature comforts associated with an upscale home. Hell, the Pilothouse Glass is 1/2 inch thick and the hull is one and a half inches of solid fiberglass drawing 6 feet of water with 3 1/2 tons of ballast, this ain't no Bayliner. If 62' is too small for you, Nordhaven makes trawlers up to 120'. You can get the full scoop on these very cool boats here

Ford Mustang SVO & Merkur Xr4ti
In the late 80's, all the cool cars had two spoilers and Ford (I believe under the direction of Bob Lutz) was beginning to move it's American product line more in line with it's European division. The Mustang SVO and the Merkur XR4ti were strong steps in that direction. For a few years, Ford's leading performance cars were powered by their excellent turbo 4 cyl engine. Unfortunately for Ford, gas remained relatively cheap and the temptation to push the 302 v8 Mustang GT and the ultra profitable Explorer SUV for the quick buck proved too great. If Ford had also kept developing their turbo 4 performance efforts, they might have been better prepared to weather the current economic situation and also could have competed more effectively with the EVO/WRXsti demographic. Either way, these are two of my favorite cars of the period, and they are both eminently collectible.

Gilligan's Island - Hamlet the Musical
Look, I like Lost as much as the next guy, but in terms of
weird and inventive plots, Lost can't touch the original
castaways of Gilligan's Island. Smoke Monsters? Bah, how
about a guy who surf's a tsunami all the way to the Island, and
then (with the help of the Professor, catches the wave on the
rebound to surf all the way back home) Hatches? Pthfft !
How about a radioactive meteor that ages people prematurely.
And finally, the coup-de-grace, how about a musical rendition
of Hamlet? Let's see Kate and Sawyer do that !
Mini Bikes - Sears Catalogue Throwback
In the 1970's, the arrival of the new Sears catalogue was an eagerly anticipated event and was met with a level of enthusiasm virtually unheard of today (I must confess, to this day, I remember what the catalogue smelled like). The phonebook sized, full color, "Dream Book" was the key to a full year's worth of childhood fantasy. Looking through the catalogue you could piece together in your mind the room that would eventually be expressed as so many adult "Man Caves". The Briggs & Stratton powered "minibike" was a staple of those catalogues and enjoyed a brief period of popularity more or less concurrent with Banana Splits reruns. All in all, a pretty crappy little vehicle, the minbike's short reign as the object of boyhood lust was ended with the introduction of 80cc Japanese Motocross bikes, three wheelers and BMX Bicycles.

The FlyMo - The Coolest Lawnmower Evah !
Although virtually unheard of in the U.S. (Most likely because of our excellent law schools), the Flymo Hover lawnmower enjoyed considerable success in the U.K. and is still being sold there. The Flymo was available in the States for a short time and I remember seeing a few ads on UHF TV alongside the Popiel Pocket Fisherman and Monkees LP's. I was in middle school and mowed lawns during the summer for money and the Flymo held out the tantalizing promise of effortless lawn mowing, to say I wanted one is the understatement of the year. You have to remember that this was around the same time Star Wars came out and the Flymo was the closest you could come to Luke's landspeeder and it was a good bit more practical to boot (what with it's ability to mow the lawn and all). With spinning blades and the ability to hoover, I think the Flymo has the potential to be an excellent all around anti-Zombie weapon when modified McGruber style.
Austin Mini Moke - "Moking is Not a Health Hazard"
Designed alongside the Iconic Mini by Sir Alec Issigonis, the Moke was laughably intended as a military vehicle in the same vein as the American Jeep and Land Rover. How Sir Alec and BMC thought the underpowered Moke, with it's low ground clearance and clown car wheels, would make a good military vehicle is beyond me. Needless to say, the British Army wasn't buying this notion either (though the Navy showed some interest in using the Moke on aircraft carriers). A flop in uniform, the irrepressibly goofy Moke was a natural entertainer and enjoyed considerable success in films and television. The Moke was the henchman's vehicle of choice in Bond movies and the TV show "The Prisoner". The villains were apparently on to something as the Moke was also popular as a resort shuttle when fitted with the obligatory striped canvas roof.

Aston Martin Lagonda - "It's Wafer Thin"
Hand Built in Britain by a storied company on the brink of solvency, the Lagonda
was the best of the times and the worst of the times. Selected by Time magazine as
one of the 50 worst cars of all time and yet the subject of almost universal longing,
the Lagonda was an emaciated, coke addicted disco supermodel of a car. With it's
moonraker inspired , computerized CRT instruments housed in a hand polished walnut
dash the Lagonda is exactly the opposite of what should be done. It's a Bizzarro World
Mercedes, using complex, fiddley computer instrumentation to monitor a v8 engine with
fiddly weber carburetors. Why? How the hell should I know? Like the answer to the
question that could only have been asked by a drug addled Saudi disco prince at 3am,
it probably made sense at the time.

1978 VW Rabbit Diesel YACFMP (yet another car from my past)
The first car I can remember my parents buying new. During the Carter
years, with gas surpassing a dollar a gallon, this was the car to have. I do
remember there being a waiting list and the usual dealer shenanigans, we
had ordered a white one with tobacco interior, but ended up with a silver
4 door with black leatherette. The 1.5 litre 48 hp diesel Rabbit returned
an unheard of (and still respectable) 53mpg highway 40mpg city. It also
boasted "peppy" performance and was capable of sprinting from 0-60mph
and with a good tailwind it could even climb a respectable grade.
It could also impress the ladies, and cemented my reputation with Martha
as a wizard with cars. I was driving this car while we were dating and being
a poor college student routine maintenance took a low priority. Shortly
before our courtship began, the starter solenoid switch went bad, so to start
it, one took a set of jumper cables and bypassed the switch to energize the
starter and fire up the motor. During this process, you appeared to be jump
starting the car without another vehicle attached, which I guess is a pretty
good trick. Go figure.

Koss Pro4aa Stereophones
Call me crazy, but I like big cans, the full sized units that completely cover your ears. The one
drawback to full sized headphones is that while wearing them you look like you are:
A: Landing Airplanes in 1965
B: An escapee from the Language Learning Lab.
C: A Ham radio enthusiast
I say, if your gonna look like a tool, then go all the way, go ahead, embrace your inner Radar,
own it, turn it up to "11" and take it straight past geek and don't stop until you get past
hip-tard. The old school Koss Pro4aa will take you there in style. What style? Who the hell
knows, but who cares ! You won't be able to hear them snicker anyway with these clamped to
your skull and cranked up. And for good sound, nothing compares to a good quality pair of over
the ear headphones and that is precisely the point.

Venetian Wells
If you have been to Venice, you have probably noticed the often intricately carved well heads in the center of nearly every campo. Since Venice is very nearly under the salt water which fills its canals, it would seem unlikely that a simple well could provide potable water. As it happens, they are not wells at all, they are cisterns which collect and filter rainwater. Basically, the Venetians excavated the plaza to a depth of around 10 feet in the form of an funnel. The hole was then lined with clay. The well was situated at the deepest part of the clay funnel and constructed out of porous bricks without mortar. The area inside the funnel and around the well was then filled with sand and covered with brick or stone. Rainwater would flow off the roofs of the city's buildings into storm drains in the plaza where it would flow through the sand (filtering it) and fill the clay cistern. Clean water could then be brought up through the well mouth.

Ariel Atom
The Ariel Atom is a handbuilt car designed by Coventry University (U.K.) student Nik Smart in
1996. The most striking aspect of the Atom is the absence of bodywork and the large tubes of
the Exoskeleton chassis. Now on it's third model iteration, the Ariel is also made in the U.S. by
TMI in Virginia. Just as in the Lotus 7/Caterham, the design leverages it's light weight to humble
cars with twice the horsepower and cost. With a 300hp supercharged Honda engine, the Atom
will scoot to sixty mph in under 3 seconds and handily beat a fast motorcycle on Top Gears test
track. Hell, Jay Leno owns one of these, that should be all the endorsement you need. I highly
recommend the Top Gear review, if for nothing else then because of what the Atom does to
Jeremy Clarkson's turkey neck. Top Gear Ariel Atom Review

Folding Kayaks
I had always thought that folding boats were a bad idea given the punishment the ocean can
dish out. You may or may not have seen ads for these in boating magazines, they were
always in the back with the kit boats and other craft of dubious provenance and safety.
As I have come to learn however, the genuinely useful things in boating magazines are not the
shiny, gel coated and carpeted, mass production boats, but the weird stuff in the back. Okay,
the fact that they had dubious sounding names like "Folbot" certainly didn't help. In any case,
my first impression was flat out wrong, in fact a Klepper folding kayak was singlehanded across
the Atlantic in 1953. I certainly had no idea that the folding kayak is used by many special forces
units for stealthy infiltration of enemy positions (presumably because they fold up into a large
duffle bag and are easy to get in and out of submarine hatches. As it turns out, Folbot kayaks
were used somewhat famously by the SAS during WWII. Go Figure.
Platt Monfort's Geodesic Airolite Boats
Platt Monfort, a chemical engineer, inventor and boat enthusiast developed the Geodesic
Airolite skin on frame construction technique for buiding strong, lightweight small boats.
Intended to be built at home, hundreds of his canoes, prams and rowboats have been
contructed by novice builders all over the world. The design consists of a lightweight
wood lattice (much like traditional kayaks) reinforced by diagonal strips of Kevlar and
covered with aerospace quality shrink-wrapped Dacron. A 16 foot canoe when built
with this technique weights approx 32 lbs. and can carry 400lbs. To put this into some
context, very expensive Carbon Fiber or Kevlar canoes are slightly heavier and a fiberglass
or poly canoe of similar size is roughly twice as heavy. Although Monfort passed in
2005, his designs are still for sale and still quite popular, check out the complete design
catalogue at the web site: Geodesic Airolite Boats

BMW Motorrad R1200 GS Sport
OTG week has thus far been concerned primarily with the requisite comfort and luxury products no self respecting militia-uh-"family campground" should be without. Equally important however is transit to and fro said camp. Sure, you COULD make do with a mere "Dirt Bike", but why settle when you could have a colossal 1200cc German dirt bike. Weighing in at 500lbs. with a 100hp 2 cylinder BMW boxer motor, THIS is a Dirt Bike - like Crocodile Dundee's Knife is a "Knife". I tend to view "traveling lightly" in the same vein as "light beer", that is something that should be avoided at all costs. The R1200 fits the bill perfectly, it can be loaded up with another 500lbs of driver, gas, ammunition, pinot noir or whatever else you should require, and with a nearly 9 gallon gas tank it can take you there and back.
Esse Wood Fired Cook Stoves
If your OTG Kitchen Appliance needs are somewhat more
traditional than the Razen Stove, ESSE may have what you
are looking for. They currently offer two wood fired kitchen
stoves (Pictured Below). They functional essentially like the
AGA range or any other stored heat cooker in that they are
designed to use very little wood and to eke out every BTU
in the Fuel. They cost and arm and a leg, and may actually
be worth it.
Razen Wood Fired Cookstove
Being OTG whether by necessity (Zombie Apocalypse) or by choice (Wilderness Camp)
need not necessitate a life devoid of euro-style. Looking to kit out your TeePee with
the latest in stainless and granite? U.K. based Razen has the stove for you, and it looks
like it's actually a pretty well thought out unit.

C. Crane Co. CCRadio
Another essential OTG item
Shortly following luxurious shelter, light, heat and a tub in Maslow's hierarchy of OTG needs is a good battery powered radio. You may be tempted to rely on a cheap K-Mart transistor Shower Radio, Hello Kitty radio or some other abomination, but I can assure you NOTHING sucks as much as trying to tune in a Red Sox pennant game in the fall, under a brilliant star lit sky, and having it fade in and out. There you are, you've got your campfire on, your drink on, the cicada's are singing and Don Orsillo is fading in and out in a battle with a mariachi station. Ninth inning, men on first and third, winning run at the plate, 2 outs, full count......AGHHHH. Well, do yourself a favor and get a good quality AM Radio, yes the price is usurious, but it's worth every penny. The CC Radio was developed by a company who's core business is bringing AM radio reception to Militiamen, Bush Pilots, Tree Standers and other hinterland dwellers.

BriteLyt Lanterns
Yet another OTG (Off the Grid) must have, the BriteLyt Petromax Style Lantern. Maybe not for the Snorkel Tub, but you're gonna need some light in your Yurt, TeePee, Cabin, Tent, Airstream or Bunker. Purportedly the brightest lantern in the world, the BriteLyt is solid brass and multifuel (capable of burning Diesel, Gas, Kero, Veg Oil etc). Manufactured and supported in the United States, the Britelyt is apparently the lantern of choice for U.S. troops in Afghanistan. Although it is also available in polished brass or chrome (left), I personally like the utilitarian flat grey of the military model below, lanterns aren't intended to be fancy. Link www.britelyt.com
Swift Wind Turbine - Cascade Engineering
Continuing the Unofficial "Off Grid" Theme of the Week
Originally Developed in Scotland by Renewable Devices the Swift Turbine is also being manufactured and Sold in the U.S. by Cascade Engineering. Unlike most wind turbines, the Swift was engineered for roof top installation from the beginning and is intended to satisfy residential zoning ordinances. To reduce objectionable noise in the neighborhood, the turbine uses a small diameter (7 feet), 5 blade ringed rotor (the ring is designed to help disrupt blade tip vortexes, a major source of noise). To cut down on noise within the house it it features special vibration damping roof mounts and because it's not mounted on a huge pole, you don't have to worry about it blowing over and landing on your neighbors house. The Swift is rated for 1.5kw in a 31mph wind and Cascade claims that noise at any speed never exceeds 31db. Cascade's web site has a neat little program that can help you determine if a wind turbine makes sense in your area.

Snorkel Cedar Hot Tub
Being "off-grid" doesn't mean you have to live like Grizzly Adams or the Unibomber.
With these wood fired wooden hit tubs, you can get your soak on , in traditional Japanese
style no less, just steps from your yurt. The water is heated by an underwater wood stove
and though "fast" by wood standards, still takes some time. Most people use these without
chemicals and change the water after a day or so. Still I can imagine few things as nice as
the luxury of a hot bath in the woods. Hey-Now !
Navigator Marine Wood Stoves
These cute little marine wood stoves are made by the Navigator Stove Works on Orcas Island in WA State (right accross the bay from Bellingham). Seems they have acquired the rights to the old Lunenburg Foundry patterns. Lunenburg had been around forever - think "Mayflower" , so it's a proven design. Navigator updated the look with colorfull porcelain coatings and stainless rails. Although they were created for use on sailing vessels, they are equally at home in any small space. One of these stoves would be great in a cabin, tent, workshop or even an RV.

The Kelly Kettle
The Kelly Kettle is an ingenious alternative to building a roaring camp fire just to boil a pot of water for coffee or tea. The basic idea behind it is that you light a small fire in the base using whatever is at hand (twigs, leaves, newspaper, etc.) and
place the kettle on the base. The kettle is essentially a normal kettle with a Chimney in the middle, surrounded by a water jacket (see right). Produced by the same Irish family for four generations, it should be pretty well de-bugged by now. Bonus McGuiver tip: Use alcohol based antibacterial gel as a firestarter LINK: Kelley Kettle
Colorado Yurt Company Platform Tents
The Colorado Yurt company makes these seemingly well sorted out Cabin Tents. Designed to be set up on a permanent platform, these seem like a good solution for family summer camp housing. Equipped with a woodstove and screening on all four sides, you could extend your stays well into the shoulder seasons. You could pull the tent down and store the tent, stove and whatever furnishings in a large storage shed, bunkhouse, cookhouse or other permanent structure, leaving only the platform exposed to the winter elements. The plaform construction makes this is a particularly good solution for hilly or uneven terrain such as a river bank or lakeside setting. And of course, the company makes Yurts and Teepee's should your tastes run in that direction.
Atari Tempest Arcade Game
In it's original 1980's arcade format, this was one of the most fun games out there. Well, at least for me, because it was the only one which I could consistently get the high score. Well, that and the fact that it's vector graphics were very crisp for the time. The trouble of course is that Tempest's main controller was a spinning knob, making it very difficult to replicate the play on a PC or console. If you have ever played it you'll know precisely what I am talking about, it's just not the same without it. If you haven't played the game, you're in luck, even without the spinner, you can still get the idea via this Atari online flash game which absolutely nails the sounds and graphics.
Henry Beston's Outermost House
In 1927 Henry Beston from Quincy, MA moved into this little (20x16) cottage way out on the spit at Nauset Beach on Cape Cod. What had originally just been a vacation stay turned into a full year on the beach, documented in his book, "The Outermost House". The Nauset beach spit for those who have not been there is an extremely narrow barrier beach peninsula formed by sand washing down from the north. Below we see the house looking towards the mainland over the great marsh, what we cannot see is the open Atlantic on the other side of the dunes. The unique location, between the tranquil marsh and the open ocean really comes through in Beston's beautiful narrative. Beston's patient and thoughtful descriptions of the weather, wildlife, people and place really capture the essence of this dramatic setting, it is one of my favorite books. The house unfortunately is no more, having been swept out to see along with much of Coast Guard beach during the blizzard of '78

The Shack at Hinckle Farm - Jeffrey Broadhurst
Built on a 27 acre mountaintop location only accessible by off-road vehicles, I really like the design of this little off the grid retreat shack Broadhurst and friends built. Clearly I am not alone as it has been featured in Architectural Record magazine, but it is a compelling example of what can be done with minimal materials and a little creativity. Necessitated by the location, it is built for off grid living, with oil lamps for light and a woodstove for heat and hot water. One especially nice feature is the windowed garage door ad a front wall. Although I admire the purity of the design, the practical side of me would likely do things somewhat differently. First off, I would undoubtedly make it somewhat larger, with more space for food storage and a composting toilette. Also have been stuck in the rain while camping, the interior needs to be large enough to accommodate chairs and a table inside. Personally I would add some larger windows side and back, and somewhat more importantly, build a screen wall behind the garage door wall to keep the bugs out. The above is not meant as criticism, merely how I would modify an already good design to suit my needs temperament and climate.
