Effects of unipolar induction in the magnetic tail of Venus.

Abstract

Venera 4, 9, and 10 measurements of the magnetic field in the Venusian tail are analyzed. A correlation is detected between the field structure in the tail and the orientation of the transverse component of the interplanetary magnetic field. It is shown that the Venus data can be interpreted within the framework of a model of the unipolar induction field which forms in the daytime ionosphere and is extended to the dark side by interaction with the solar wind.
